2012 Evergreen Classic: A Message From the Board

by WSHJA Shows April 26, 2012 in Announcements, Shows

For 2012 there are significant changes for the Evergreen Classic Benefit Horse Show.  The WSHJA Board of Directors would like to share the following message regarding these changes and the investments being made on behalf of the membership:

Show season is upon us, and, once again, WSHJA is proud to bring you the 2012 Spring National Show Circuit, the Northwest Autumn Classic and the October Classic. We hope that you enjoyed these shows last year and we look forward to bringing you another year filled with worthy competition, wonderful hospitality and a winning spirit.

This year, WSHJA is hosting the Evergreen Classic Benefit Horse Show for the first time in several years. The Evergreen Classic has a 30+ year history in the Pacific Northwest as our premier horse show, providing the opportunity to show on the grass and giving us the chance to all come together and celebrate with parties under the tents, fantastic hunter derby events and a challenging Grand Prix.  We have hired Dianne Johnson as the Show Manager; we are excited to see Dianne in action as she puts together another fantastic show for the WSHJA community.

Previously, there has been some concern in regard to the condition of the footing of this show since it’s been held at the Remlinger grounds in Carnation. We want you to know that we are doing everything we can to ensure that the footing will be safe and suitable for our horses. Along those lines, we have hired Hans Van Meenen to assess the footing and give us a plan for the year which we are implementing immediately. Hans is extremely well respected in the field of show grounds footing. He is responsible for the grounds at HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal California and others in both the US and Canada. Hans has assured us that he will be bringing his vast wealth of knowledge to our show – giving us the ability to not only improve the footing for this year, but to continue to care for it so that it flourishes in the following years – providing us with a continued investment in the future of The Classic. The Evergreen Classic is a show with a long history in Washington State, and we, as a board, are excited about continuing the legacy of this horse show.  We want to communicate to you, our members, that we are committed to doing whatever it takes to make this show a wonderful experience for all.

For those of you who want this show to be a success as much as we do, we need your help! We are pulling everything together, but we need YOU! We are looking for sponsors, of all levels, to help with the show effort. And we need all kinds of volunteers. In order for The Classic to be the show that we all want it to be, we must come together as a community and work toward that goal. We hope that, by stating our commitment to you, you too, will find yourself willing to help in whatever way possible to ensure The Evergreen Classic reaches the high standards we have all come to look for in this top rated show.

There are many ways to get involved. Please take a moment to look through the sponsorship opportunity documents and the volunteer opportunity document.

We are at the shows, so bring your horse over and try it on before you buy!

For more than 30 years, WSHJA has been presenting some of the finest Hunter and Jumper shows in the Pacific Northwest. Our premier USEF-rated horse shows offer fun and thrilling competition for beginners and Grand Prix riders alike, and often provide unique skill-building opportunities through clinics and special events. Our distinctive shows feature beautifully designed courses, wonderful prizes and amenities, and an increasing emphasis on exhibitor and spectator-friendliness.

WSHJA is a non-profit member-run association, reliant on the generosity of its sponsors, the charitable contributions of its volunteers and the participation of the hunter jumper community at large to make the show go on! WSHJA is one of the very few USHJA Affiliate Associations in the country to hold its own competitions. All “profits” earned from the shows WSHJA presents are reinvested back into the organization, except when the show is a benefit show, to enhance its offerings to the WSHJA membership and the hunter jumper community as a whole.

First Rule In Winning: You’ve Got To Show Up

by WSHJA Member Services September 15, 2011 in Membership, Shows

It’s the show season, and, as you walk into the show office at your first show, you realize you forgot to renew your WSHJA membership. Hastily you drop everything into the mail or even manage to go online and submit it that way– but the show has already started. What about your points? Do they count from the moment you mail it, or when you hit the submit button online? Now, thanks to your WSHJA board members, and member feedback, the policy is to back date your membership to the Monday of the week you submit your forms – this means your points for that show will count for the week and you are on your way to earning that Year End Division Championship.

Did you know that if there weren’t enough horses in the first class of your division, the rest of the division wouldn’t count for points? Not anymore! Because of membership involvement and the support of the board, this rule was changed and points were counted in all of the classes in which there were enough riders. (The USEF/USHJA enacted the same rule change)

At the Northwest Autumn Classic you’ll see all classes - hunters and jumpers – that are over a 1.10M competing only indoors. This is another change – brought about by member input, and made realistic by the WSHJA board and Horse Show Committee. Tickets for prizes – and a broader selection of prizes – were also based on membership input, as well as putting a cap on add/scratch fees at WSHJA shows. All of these were changes that the WSHJA hopes will continue to improve your showing experience, and all of them are changes that came about from someone in the community requesting them.

These changes and more all had one thing in common – you. All of the rule changes came about due to membership comments and board participation – each one showing your direct impact on WSHJA and your showing experience.

In our day to day business, we forget that we can have an impact on the groups in which we participate. We sign up for the year, pay our member dues, and then forget about it until we get our yearly banquet invite. We stand at the back gate, or at the end of the year party, and feel as if things are “the way they are” and that they will never change – but the reality is, we can continue to improve and grow our shows and our experiences through our influence at WSHJA, and the current WSHJA board is very open to your thoughts.

Quite often we don’t have a lot of time to attend meetings, or volunteer to be on the board, but WSHJA needs to hear from its members. Policy changes – such as the one in regard to the points being back dated – were the ideas of WSHJA members, and were taken up with the board in order to illicit change – which is exactly what your WSHJA board wants.

This is YOUR association and YOUR membership and the time to get involved is now. Your involvement can range from becoming a board member, to just attending a meeting and sharing your thoughts. But, if nothing else, make the time to talk to one of your WSHJA representatives before the show season ends. Tell them what you like, what you don’t like, or what your wish would be for an even better horse show. Not every change can happen, right away at least, but WSHJA members are fortunate enough to have a board that values their thoughts and is dedicated to making strides towards an association that makes us proud to be a member.

As You Plan Your Last Shows Of The Season

by Admin September 14, 2011 in Announcements, Points, Shows

Everyone at WSHJA hopes you have enjoyed this show season--having had fun and success at all the shows you attended. Please keep in mind that qualifying for year-end awards requires you and each horse show in TWO USEF-rated Washington State shows. That’s two shows for you the rider to earn equitation points and two shows for each horse registered with WSHJA to earn hunter or jumper points. Any questions please direct to Karen Freywald at points@wshja.org.

Northwest Autumn Classic Honored To Host Zone IX Finals!

The USHJA Zone 9 Finals will return to WSHJA’s Northwest Autumn Classic, September 14th-18th at the Evergreen Equestrian Park in Monroe, WA. USHJA Zone 9 will be awarding great awards to the top six places for all Rated Hunter Sections, Children's, Adult Amateur, Pony and Amateur Owner/Junior Jumpers.

The USHJA has introduced a new point system for the Zone Finals—essentially that instead of one class counting bonus points for the year end awards, the whole divisions will count for bonus points as follows: 1st – 50, 2nd – 40, 3rd – 30, 4th – 20, 5th – 10, 6th – 5, 7th- 4, 8th- 2 and Champion – 100, Reserve Champion - 75

Zone Finals competition will include 2 O/F and 1 U/S class for each section and zone bonus points will be awarded based on the newly revised criteria. This applies to all Rated Hunter Sections and Children's(1.10m), Adult Amateur(1.10m), and Pony Jumpers.

Children’s Jumper, Adult Jumper, Pony Jumper, 5-Year Old, 6-Year Old and 7/8 Year Old Jumper will receive points from the Zone Finals Bonus Point Chart excluding Champion and Reserve Points.

Junior Jumper and Amateur Owner Jumper points will be based on one point for every dollar won unless no money is awarded and then these classes will receive points from the Zone Finals Bonus Point Chart excluding Champion and Reserve points.

Please direct any questions regarding the Zone 9 Finals to Dianne Johnson dianjnsn@aol.com
